What's the difference, I wondered, between a ghost and a memory? It poured all day today and this was the perfect, haunting read to stay curled up with, inside, listening to the rain。 It was delightfully creepy and eerie and I thoroughly enjoyed it。 Very atmospheric。 This is my first book by Jennifer McMahon but certainly won't be my last。 What's the difference, I wondered, between a ghost and a memory? It poured all day today and this was the perfect, haunting read to stay curled up with, inside, listening to the rain。 It was delightfully creepy and eerie and I thoroughly enjoyed it。 Very atmospheric。 This is my first book by Jennifer McMahon but certainly won't be my last。 。。。more

This is really 3。5 stars, but I rounded up。I thought the plot was really well done and couldn't stop reading。 However I felt like there were some major plot holes and the ending didn't work for me。 This is really 3。5 stars, but I rounded up。I thought the plot was really well done and couldn't stop reading。 However I felt like there were some major plot holes and the ending didn't work for me。 。。。more

To err is human, to forgive, Devine。 What a beautiful statement for such a beautifully written book。 This book was fantastic, the writing, story line, the people (in which freaked me out a bit as there were many similarities to my own self and family, including a last name in there。 Perhaps that’s why I loved it so much。 Jennifer McMahon has always been one of my top favourites and although I am sad to finish this book I am so grateful to have read it。 I can’t really say much because I would hat To err is human, to forgive, Devine。 What a beautiful statement for such a beautifully written book。 This book was fantastic, the writing, story line, the people (in which freaked me out a bit as there were many similarities to my own self and family, including a last name in there。 Perhaps that’s why I loved it so much。 Jennifer McMahon has always been one of my top favourites and although I am sad to finish this book I am so grateful to have read it。 I can’t really say much because I would hate to spoil any part of this to the next reader。 All I can say is, every single page is worth a read, I will likely read it again! This book was very well written and will be perfect for those who like a good spooky, atmospheric story。 I keep trying paranormal thrillers and it just doesn’t work as a good sub genre for me。 🤷🏻‍♀️So don’t let my rating of it prevent you from trying it if you enjoy those types of books!

This was a very strange story to me。 I was interested but not connected。 It is creepy and not what expected。 If i was reading it, I would not have finished it, but because I was going the audio version, I did finish it。 I did enjoy the narrator's voice。 This was a very strange story to me。 I was interested but not connected。 It is creepy and not what expected。 If i was reading it, I would not have finished it, but because I was going the audio version, I did finish it。 I did enjoy the narrator's voice。 。。。more

"When I'm in the water, I feel like she's still with me。"The Drowning Kind by Jennifer McMahon was so much fun to read。 I really looked forward to sitting down with this book at the end of the day。 It's light enough to be relaxing but just creepy enough that I'd want to keep the lights on while reading。 I always enjoy McMahon's books and this one didn't disappoint。 They always remind me of adult versions of the ghost stories my cousins and I would devour as kids。 I like how this book alternates "When I'm in the water, I feel like she's still with me。"The Drowning Kind by Jennifer McMahon was so much fun to read。 I really looked forward to sitting down with this book at the end of the day。 It's light enough to be relaxing but just creepy enough that I'd want to keep the lights on while reading。 I always enjoy McMahon's books and this one didn't disappoint。 They always remind me of adult versions of the ghost stories my cousins and I would devour as kids。 I like how this book alternates chapters between present day and early in the twentieth century。 The reader is able to get a thorough history of the Brandenburg Springs and Sparrow Crest。 I can't wait to see what McMahon comes up with next。 。。。more

I thought overall this was a good psychological thriller。 It involved the magical spring that had been in the family。 Told from two different point of views and time lines。 In 1929, a desperate woman takes a trip to the the springs with her husband after a grand hotel was built near the springs。 She was infertile and wished desperately to have a child。 She drank the water and the child was born but was premature and would not live long。 Giving the newborn the spring water was a miracle。 Circa 20 I thought overall this was a good psychological thriller。 It involved the magical spring that had been in the family。 Told from two different point of views and time lines。 In 1929, a desperate woman takes a trip to the the springs with her husband after a grand hotel was built near the springs。 She was infertile and wished desperately to have a child。 She drank the water and the child was born but was premature and would not live long。 Giving the newborn the spring water was a miracle。 Circa 2019, a sister drowned into the pool that was their home。 Is the spring pool cursed or is it a miracle? I was absolutely hooked the moment they played the game in the pool。 This book was super creepy and I could personally relate to Jackie's personality and personal family struggles。 The only part missing for me was being left with questions at the end。 I liked how it ended but wish more questions were answered。 I was absolutely hooked the moment they played the game in the pool。 This book was super creepy and I could personally relate to Jackie's personality and personal family struggles。 The only part missing for me was being left with questions at the end。 I liked how it ended but wish more questions were answered。 。。。more

I love McMahon。 I was so excited for this book to come out and she did not disappoint, never has。 The only fictional book that has ever actually creeped me out, with a great twist ending。 Triggers for brief but repeated self harm。

This is such an atmospheric book and I loved feeling like I was right there watching everything unfold。 The story is told in two timelines and both are interesting and it kept me guessing as to how they intersect。 I was drawn a little more towards the older timeline because I felt more connected to the characters and the decisions they took。 Despite all this I just felt a bit let down by the climax and the ending。 It fell flat and I was surprised by the author’s choices in the epilogue。 It was a This is such an atmospheric book and I loved feeling like I was right there watching everything unfold。 The story is told in two timelines and both are interesting and it kept me guessing as to how they intersect。 I was drawn a little more towards the older timeline because I felt more connected to the characters and the decisions they took。 Despite all this I just felt a bit let down by the climax and the ending。 It fell flat and I was surprised by the author’s choices in the epilogue。 It was almost as if after finishing the book she realized there were no twists and had to put one in, so she just tacked the last chapter on。 A solid read but nothing exemplary。 。。。more

If you want a creepy, atmospheric ghost story, this is the one for you。 Ms。 McMahon has done a wonderful job with setting。 We can smell the pool and feel the water。 And, since we are smarter than the characters, we know to stay away。The story is told in two time frames。 Ethel and Will, the older couple, are wonderful, sympathetic characters。 In the category of Beware What You Wish For, Ethel desperately wants a child--and gets it。 But not quite the way she expected。The modern character, Jackie, If you want a creepy, atmospheric ghost story, this is the one for you。 Ms。 McMahon has done a wonderful job with setting。 We can smell the pool and feel the water。 And, since we are smarter than the characters, we know to stay away。The story is told in two time frames。 Ethel and Will, the older couple, are wonderful, sympathetic characters。 In the category of Beware What You Wish For, Ethel desperately wants a child--and gets it。 But not quite the way she expected。The modern character, Jackie, is a little tougher to bond to。 Early in the book she tells the reader of being essentially cut out of her grandmother's will。 It wasn't fair, and she has every right to be angry。 Her bipolar older sister, Lexie, whose personality and behavior resemble the city dump, doesn't offer to share or help Jackie; instead, she gleefully moves into the house both girls loved as children。 Jackie retreats to her home across the country until a year later when Lexie dies。 Jackie then engages in endless self-flagellation for the next hundred pages for "abandoning" her sister。 A social worker would know better。 Options are limited with a bipolar person who refuses medication or therapy。 By the third or fourth time Jackie called herself a "selfish a**hole," I was ready to move on。But that's when the plot thickened。 Is there a ghost? Multiple ghosts? Or is a living human trying to terrorize the sisters and their family? You'll be guessing until the end。 。。。more

A book that was hard to put down。A story about family and a magical pool that can grant wishes, heal or hurt you。

The build up of the story and the descriptions were done very well and the creepy atmosphere was perfect。 However, there was a lot of repetition and the slow burn to find out whether it’s true paranormal or not was a bit too slow。The ending also felt extremely abrupt—I had to read it twice and even then I’m still a bit confused。 (And as a social worker myself I’m also VERY disappointed in the Declan storyline being brought up in the beginning, referenced a few times, and then dropped completely? I enjoyed this, I certainly thought it was creepy! I thought the dual timeline made the book especially atmospheric, I'm finding that I'm enjoying small town, hotel mysteries。 I also liked the family history aspect of the story, did the family know that the pool was supposedly cursed or not? I truly felt for Jax, having to deal with her sister's death while she was trying to distance herself from her sister's drama。 I enjoyed this, I certainly thought it was creepy! This is my favorite Jennifer McMahon novel It is hauntingly creepy - ghostly atmospheric - and character rich。 I loved the use of water as alluring yet cursed - addicting yet plagued - eerily intrusive。 The springs and pool are as much a character in this novel as are Lexi and Jax, two sisters who visit the pool during their childhood and end up inheriting the estate - enter obsession。 The story moves from these present day characters to a 1920's timeline with the characters Will and Ethel, newl This is my favorite Jennifer McMahon novel It is hauntingly creepy - ghostly atmospheric - and character rich。 I loved the use of water as alluring yet cursed - addicting yet plagued - eerily intrusive。 The springs and pool are as much a character in this novel as are Lexi and Jax, two sisters who visit the pool during their childhood and end up inheriting the estate - enter obsession。 The story moves from these present day characters to a 1920's timeline with the characters Will and Ethel, newlyweds, who desperately want a child。 They hear of the natural springs that have healing attributes and is said to grant wishes - 'Be careful what you wish for' - enter addition。 The story, like the waters, draws you in - it is an excellently crafted haunting tale。I enjoyed the two narrators in the audio version - one for each timeline。 Their narration was spot on for each set of the characters and timelines。 They added to the eeriness of the novel。 。。。more

Well 。。。 I didn't know this was going to have a supernatural element to it other than it was going to have some "ghost story" theme。 Anyways it did turn out to be a good story 。。。even with it having the supernatural element it wasn't my kind of ghost story I would normally pick out for myself。 Well 。。。 I didn't know this was going to have a supernatural element to it other than it was going to have some "ghost story" theme。 Anyways it did turn out to be a good story 。。。even with it having the supernatural element it wasn't my kind of ghost story I would normally pick out for myself。 。。。more

I found it to be so eerie and tense。 There were times when I was flipping the pages so quickly because I just could not read fast enough! I loved how the chapters alternated between past and present as it was so enjoyable to find out the backstory behind Sparrow Crest and the springs。 The springs are almost like a character all on their own。 They have so much life and such a dark history。 I loved how McMahon described literally everything in the book from start to finish。 While I can see some readers not loving the ending, I am a big fan! I did think it ended a little fast which would be my only thing about the book。 Ultimately I think I just wasn’t ready for it to end! If you enjoy suspense and the supernatural I would highly recommend giving this one a read! 4。5/5 ⭐️ rounded up to 5/5 ⭐️ 。。。more
